CIR recently sponsored two military social work research-focused Special Interest Group luncheon meetings at the annual conference of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) in San Diego on January 17 & 18, 2013. On January 17, attendees enjoyed a presentation by Col. Carl Castro, Director of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), regarding opportunities for conducting DoD-funded behavioral health research. Col. Castro provided valuable information about DoD research priorities and related funding mechanisms, and shared helpful insights regarding the proposal submission and scientific review process. Click here to download Col. Castro’s slide presentation regarding DoD research priorities and funding mechanisms.
On January 18, CIR’s Dr. Anthony Hassan facilitated a roundtable-style networking opportunity, allowing researchers to connect with others currently examining (or having interest in) one of several topics, including military behavioral health, veteran homelessness, military children & families, veteran employment, and military behavioral health workforce development.

Military service is inherently dangerous. Service members are exposed to a wide variety of both physical and psychological stressors that cannot always be avoided. Within the psychological domain, we have developed the Military Occupational Mental Health Model that serves as a unifying framework for how we might protect, intervene early and treat service members throughout their military career. Approaches to preventing suicides and treating post-traumatic stress disorder are used to illustrate the value of this approach.
Colonel Carl Castro is currently the Director of the Military Operational Medicine Research Program, U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command at Fort Detrick, Maryland where he oversees a wide-range of research programs including Psychological Health and Resilience, Injury Prevention, Environmental Medicine and Physiological Health and Well-being.
Colonel Castro has published over 60 scientific articles, as well as serving as co-editor of the four volume series entitled, “Military life: The psychology of serving in peace and combat.” His military awards include: the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak-leaf clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak-leaf clusters, the Joint Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Expert Field Medical Badge, and the Parachutist Badge. Colonel Castro is also the recipient of the Chief of the Medical Service Corps Award of Excellence.
