Cross-Disciplinary Research and Collaboration

Admiral Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, addresses an audience at a CIR event in June 2010
CIR strives to connect collaborators across disciplines in order to inform research, disseminate information, and promote best practices to ease the transition of veterans and their families in the community. Accordingly, CIR regularly sponsors and coordinates various events related to military-impacted populations. These events are intended to engage students and community members across disciplines and social groups, and bring awareness and foster connections within the community in addressing reintegration challenges faced by servicemembers, veterans, and their family members.
CIR also plans to establish an annual international cross-disciplinary conference to bring together not only academics, but behavioral healthcare providers and community members involved in assisting the reintegration of military-impacted populations. This collaborative effort aims to expand the exploration of the issues and challenges facing veterans and their families beyond the narrow treatment that they receive within each field individually, and leverage knowledge and effort from all disciplines into finding solutions that will benefit these populations.
