Higher Education Working Group

The Higher Education Working Group consists of representative certifying officials, admission coordinators and veteran resource center contacts from community colleges, trade schools, and universities across Los Angeles County. This working group strives to develop and share best practices with schools, and develop an agenda of working items that can drive a better educational experience for veterans in Los Angeles.

KOOKIE MURRAY is coordinator of the veteran resource center at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC). She has a background in human services and her expertise includes aiding at-risk youths, families and children, and education institutes. Murray led the establishment of the LATTC veteran resource center, which now provides services for up to 1,100 veterans in the college. Murray is a continuous advocate for the establishment of veteran resource centers across the entire Los Angeles Community College District, the largest in the nation.

EMILY IVES is the veterans program director at UCLA’s veteran resource office and the coordinator for the current and former foster youth program. She works collaboratively with Student Affairs partners and other campus organizations to enhance the experience of service members and student veterans, as well as current and former foster youth at UCLA. Ives has previous experience working in a variety of student affairs disciplines, including facility management, staff training and development, risk management, and aquatics, as well as an account manager for a federally funded research and development center in the nonprofit field.

  • Veteran Resource Center Guidelines: Developing a detailed guideline and implementation plan for community colleges on how to open up veteran resource centers on their campuses.

A goal sheet is a record of each working group’s various goals and ongoing projects.

Higher Education’s overall goal is to advocate for the establishment of veteran resource centers (VRC) on all community colleges, California State Universities (CSU), and University of California (UC) campuses across Southern California.
