School to host statewide event on military children’s education

The USC School of Social Work will co-host the Military Child Education Coalition’s California Public Engagement conference, with approximately 100 influential policymakers, community leaders and military officials invited to collaborate on ways to support the education of military children in California.

Professor Ron Astor, who leads the School of Social Work’s Building Capacity in Military-Connected Schools project, and Anthony Hassan, director of the USC Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families, will chair the event slated for Sept. 20 at the Radisson Midtown.

Student advocates for better mental health care in military

Mental health disorders in active-duty servicemembers have increased 65 percent since 2000, according to the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center. While federal agencies have dedicated more resources to screen and treat combat troops in recent years, incidents such as the U.S. Army sergeant allegedly murdering 16 civilians in Afghanistan raise serious questions if it is enough.

USC School of Social Work partners with King’s Centre for Military Health Research

The USC School of Social Work’s Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families (CIR) has announced a partnership with the King’s Centre for Military Health Research at King’s College London to bring together scholars in the United States, United Kingdom and around the world to share an open exchange of information and ideas on military-related behavioral health and disseminate knowledge that aims to develop a greater understanding of the issues facing veterans and their families and that lead to effective treatments and solutions.

Virtual Patient – Progress Update

The USC Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families (CIR), in partnership with the USC Institute for Creative Technologies, is currently developing a human avatar known as the Virtual Patient. This first application of virtual reality in a social work setting is used to help prepare students to interact with real clients. The realistic role-playing with an avatar that responds to open-ended questions will allow students to hone their clinical skills.

 

Hutto Patterson Foundation endows military social work scholarship

The Hutto Patterson Charitable Foundation has endowed a scholarship at the USC School of Social Work for students pursuing careers to help families cope with the stresses of military life.

The $50,000 gift established the Catherine Hutto Gordon and Eileen Clare Hutto Scholarship for Military Social Work, which will aid students studying this growing field of the social work profession. Many military social work students at the School of Social Work are veterans themselves who are keenly aware of how issues such as deployment and frequent relocations affect military families.

New Continuing Education focuses on military behavioral health

The USC Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families is now offering online continuing education courses aimed at behavioral healthcare professionals.

Partially funded by a $6.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, CIR’s continuing education classes are a part of its A Rapid and Revolutionary Response to the Needs of Wounded Warriors project, through which the center is developing a comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum designed to train therapists for working with servicemembers and their families.

Weiss receives international award for military social work paper

Eugenia Weiss, clinical assistant professor at the USC School of Social Work, has received the International Award for Excellence in the area of health and wellness from the International Journal of Health, Wellness and Society for the paper “The Influence of Military Culture and Veteran Worldviews on Mental Health Treatment: Practice Implications for Combat Veteran Help-Seeking and Wellness.”

Weiss’ article, which was co-authored by Jose Coll of Saint Leo University, was selected for the award from the 10 highest-ranked papers that emerged from the referee process.
