Oct 14, 2015 – LAVC and Legal and Re-Entry’s passionate fighter, Jodi Galvin, gathered veteran service providers and concerned veterans together to discuss the need for LA County to link incarcerated veterans to the proper services and resources they need for reintegration back into the community.
One major subject of discussion was the goal to train Veteran Justice Officers (VJOs) to become community providers who will link vets with the appropriate services they need in order to sustain a continuity of care upon release.

On Monday, Nov. 16, the USC Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families held a discussion with Edward Tick, PhD, executive director and co-founder of Soldier’s Heart, which seeks to restore the emotional, moral and spiritual wounds of service members that result from military service. Information obtained by school district can help provide resources to students and their families

The Los Angeles Unified School District is identifying students whose parents are on active military duty, city and district officials announced at Leland Street Elementary in San Pedro.
LAUSD is the largest school district in the country to ask whether a student has a parent serving on active duty or as a veteran or with the National Guard or Reserves, said USC School of Social Work Professor Ron Avi Astor, who researches the needs of children with ties to the military.

In January, the VA settled the most dramatic lawsuit in its 128-year history. The 388-acre West Los Angeles VA campus originally dedicated to veterans as a “spiritual home” had lost its way and the suit, among other forces, called for a redesign of its master plan to reconnect to its mission. Officials have reached out to the veteran community to ask them what they need and want from the new campus.

The Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families at the USC School of Social Work has received two gifts totaling $125,000 to support local efforts aimed at making Los Angeles the most veteran-friendly place in the country.
The gifts from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation will provide necessary support to the Los Angeles Veterans Collaborative, a network of more than 400 organizations and stakeholders that meets monthly to discuss some of the most pressing issues facing local military populations.
